Patient care continues even after all the primary services go home. The nights service line is responsible for ensuring that patients continue to receive ongoing workup and care throughout the night in tight coordination with the goals and directives of the daytime providers. At nighttime, emergencies can and do occur, and the nocturnists are able to respond immediately and effectively, providing critical care even on patients they don't know as intimately as those who have been caring for the patients during the daytime. Additionally, nocturnists continue to admit patients from the emergency department, other hospitals, and provide consults on other patients throughout the night. Fundamentally, where patients are concerned, the goal is to be a single coordinated team providing high value, high quality, and effective care regardless of what time is on the clock.
