"He told me, 'you're going to ride again,'  and he got me here." - Archie Chant

What is Trauma Fracture?

Traumatic fractures occur in the presence of a significant impact or force. Most of these injuries would be considered “displaced” fractures. A displaced fracture occurs when there is a noticeable movement away from the normal position of the bone. This type of fracture cannot be repaired with standard castings or splints and will require surgical treatment such as resetting and realigning the fragment ends.

On any given day, our orthopedic surgeons are working to save a limb, stabilize a complex fracture, correct a deformity, or heal a bone infection. They're working with other doctors, coordinating your care with a rehabilitation specialist, or providing additional training to paramedics.

Osseointegration

Osseointegration of the limb is a surgical procedure used for the permanent placement of artificial limbs connected to the human skeleton. A metal implant is inserted into the amputated extremity bone. The connector passes through the skin and attaches to the prosthesis.   After several weeks, it integrates with the bone, allowing movement and pain relief. Osseointegration aims to offer a better quality of life and improved function and mobility to people who have had an amputation.

  • Tiny saddles and youth rodeo

    Feb 21, 2023
As small town populations decline, people in places like western Kansas look for ways to keep their rural farming and ranching lifestyle alive for the next generation. Some families think youth rodeo might be part of the answer.
  • Osseointegration, A Game Changer for Amputee's

    Dec 31, 2022
As more people with amputations choose osseointegration (OI), prosthetists across the country are learning how to support this patient base. About 2,000 patients across the world have undergone the procedure to have titanium implanted inside their bones to connect to their prostheses. About 500 of those patients have received the Osseo anchored Prostheses for the Rehabilitation of Amputees (OPRA) Implant System, the only US Food and Drug (FDA)-Approved osseointegration solution in the United States.
  • Gait Analysis Osseointegration

    Dec 15, 2022
Background: More than half of patients with lower-limb amputation who use socket prostheses experience at least one fall annually. These falls are primarily attributed to reduced proprioception which negatively affects balance. A promising alternative to socket prostheses are osseointegrated prostheses that involve direct fixation of the prosthetic limb to the residual limb through a bone-anchored implant, yet its effect on balance remains unknown. Research question: Do osseointegrated prostheses change static and dynamic balance, as well as patient reported measures of balance confidence, compared to a socket prosthesis?
  • Just the beginning, Dani Diaz

    Apr 4, 2022
On July 4, 2022, I was barely able to move, heavy chested, fatigued, sweating, heart was racing, and my body felt swollen. I was taken to the hospital. After getting things checked out, they told me I was positive for COVID-19. I had told them about my previous history of pericarditis and myocarditis, and they just said that my heart rate was most likely elevated due to the virus and had me go home that day.
