鈥婭n Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a congenital heart defect, the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped. This forces the right side of the heart to perform the work of pumping blood both to the lungs and to the rest of the body. As a result of this defect, the body doesn't receive enough oxygenated blood. The reconstruction of this defect is performed in multiple surgeries over the first few years of a child's life.
